International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

9th August 2025

Each year on 9th August, the world pauses to recognise and celebrate the rights, cultures and contributions of Indigenous peoples everywhere. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1994, the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is a globally significant occasion – and one that holds particular resonance here in Australia, home to the world’s oldest living cultures.

The date marks the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations in 1982, a milestone in the global movement to protect Indigenous rights. Every year, the UN sets a dedicated theme that draws attention to the issues most pressing for Indigenous communities worldwide – from land rights and language preservation to education and self-determination.

What It Means for Australia

Australia is home to over 250 distinct Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language groups, each with its own traditions, stories and knowledge systems. This day serves as an important reminder of the depth and diversity of First Nations cultures here – and of the responsibility shared by all Australians to learn, listen and act in the spirit of respect and reconciliation.

For schools and organisations, the 9th of August is an ideal occasion to embed meaningful First Nations cultural learning into your program – not as a one-off gesture, but as part of a genuine commitment to cultural understanding.

Mark the Day with an Aboriginal Incursions Workshop

Aboriginal Incursions provides authentic, educator-led cultural workshops for schools and businesses across Australia. Our programs – grounded in First Nations storytelling, art, music and knowledge – bring the significance of this day to life in a way that is engaging, respectful and curriculum-aligned.

Available programs for schools include Dreaming workshops, Aboriginal art experiences and live cultural performances. For organisations and corporates, our Cultural Competence and professional learning sessions are an excellent way to observe the day with purpose.
